What started as a simple Google search for better and cheaper locally grown produce might just turn into a whole new life experience not just for me but my whole family.
I have had the pleasure of meeting two very generous and enthusiastic farmers (Mary Choate and Aaron Brachfeld of Coastalfields farm) that have developed an all natural, no herbicides, no pesticides and no fertilizers method of farming called “Active Fallow“. Their fields look more like meadows than traditional agricultural fields with the produce growing in harmony with so called weeds and bugs. Actually, the whole method relies on the whole ecosystem to regulate itself so that you end up with zero impact agriculture.
What a great source of all natural food! Even better than organic produce because organic farmers can still use fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, just in a more controlled fashion than traditional agriculture. Many people don’t know that…
Although I have absolutely no background in farming besides a window box of kitchen herbs and a few flower pots here and there, something inside of me responded very strongly to the Active Fallow approach in light of all the challenges our land, soil and food production have been facing for the last decade and more that I have officially become an apprentice of the Active Fallow method.
Yep, I have taken the plunge to start my own garden using the Active Fallow method and see how far I can take it. This blog will follow me through my adventure of turning an outdoor-loving town girl into a gardener and perhaps even a farmer.
Who would have thunked that?
